Delusionofgrandeur has a big future…

after his performance in the Albert Bartlett at Musselburgh

After a nice steady 45 minute trip to watch Delusionofgrandeur (call him Delboy)..win his Novice Hurdle at Catterick on New Years Day, a round trip to Musselburgh of over 500 miles was not something I was looking forward to.
As things turned out, the trip was well worthwhile, and whilst we didn`t get the result we`d hoped for, my God what a race our fella ran in defeat to be beaten just TWO lengths…AND staying on at the end despite the problem of Danny Cook losing an iron on the run in.

Superlatives a plenty have been noted, and not just from my members.

RUK race commentator John Hunt commented  on more than one occasion how well Delboy was jumping, even using the word “FABULOUS” at one hurdle.

Connections of the second horse Fagan came over and congratulated us saying Delboy had run a “super” race.

Timeforms assessment of Delboys performance…..

“has improved for having his stamina tested of late and produced best effort yet facing tougher opposition than previously, putting up a really likeable display; made running, jumped fluently, pushed along before 3 out, headed approaching last, battled on well, held when rider lost irons near finish; he’ll continue to give a good account and is every inch the type his stable will do really well from over fences next season.”

Danny Cook on dismounting said “he`s a really lovely horse…certain to improve…especially when we go chasing”

Sue, never one to get carried away, didn`t say much, but the smile did all the talking

Horrible weather….O & T accommodation marquee  where we sat in fear of the roof disappearing…..cold and wet, but another superlative in the way we were looked after by staff at Musselburgh Racecourse.

As ever, the craic with syndicate members contributed towards the event, and it was great to have my good friend   PJ (Phil) Martin join in with us.

Phil bought into Delboy shortly after Harvey bought him at Doncaster Sales, and we were all delighted for him earlier in the afternoon when his Five in a Row somehow managed to win the 4th race as a result of another amazing ride from Danny Cook.

Phil has become one of the best known supporters of NH racing in the North, and he, with his distinctive green, black, white and red colours, very much deserve all the successes he, and Trainer Brian Ellison achieve.

No idea where we go from here with Delboy, but it will NOT be the Cheltenham Festival….this year anyway !!
