It was approaching my 50th birthday 1996 I knew I had a health problem, but when told I needed urgent heart surgery in February 1996,
With James Given as my chosen trainer, Mister McGoldrick had a gentle introduction to his career at Yarmouth on the 16th August 2000, finishing 7th of 8 over 1ml 2f.
Success came in his second race, 4 weeks later at Haydock, on Friday 22nd Sept in the Glover Maiden Stakes, again over 1ml 2f with jockey Dean McKeown on board.
A very moderate race, nevertheless, he could do no more than win
Watch the race below!
There then followed a period of 15 months, and ten races on the flat, without Mister McG troubling the judge.
This prompted James Given to recommend I should take him to Doncaster Sales, stating, if he is going to be any good, it won`t be on the flat.
After careful thought, and with National Hunt trainers Sue and Harvey Smith only 8 miles from my home, I took a deep breath, and picked up the phone.
Sue answered, and agreed to “take him on” and train him to find out whether he would be any use over hurdles.
However, after arrival, and when she was unloading him from the horsebox, she said to her husband, “what have we let ourselves in for here Harvey”. ?
EIGHT weeks later,,on the 2nd March 2002 at Doncaster in his first run over hurdles, Mister McGoldrick gave her the answer, and his rise to fame had begun.
Watch the Doncaster race for yourselves on video 2, and further success again 3 weeks later at Bangor on video 3
Quality of videos not brilliant, but they are all over 20 years old.
If you have a memory of Mister McGoldrick that you would like to share, please send us a message via our Memories page. We will add it to our site as soon as we have reviewed it.
Hello, Friday 19th July, Called in at Sue Smith yard today, and paid a quick visit to see Romeo still grazing on his summer break
Sincere apologies to all for the lack of information relating to our McGoldrick Racing horses, mainly due to yours truly being hospitalised…. but no need
Sad to report that after many months of patience and TLC, Romeo went to Haydock on Wednesday 20th March to qualify for a place in
Just a small snapshot maybe, but just look at the amazing landscape which Mister McGoldrick wakes up to every morning….. and there`s still hundreds more acres of land, which you can`t see !! for “Mac” and his resident mates at New Beginnings to run loose within.
It’s absolutely, totally idyllic, especially on a summers day, and thanks to Pam and Trevor at New Beginnings for looking after “Mac” and all the horses in their care, with such kindness and dedication.
