Fill the Power Carlisle ….Sunday 11th Dec 2016

This was a quick return to the Racecourse for FTP  after a lack lustre performance at Kelso seven days earlier, finishing 6th of 8 in a Veterans Chase.

This time it was back to the scene of FTP`s last success over C and D at Carlisle in May 2015, and as it was a 0 – 125 hcp, off his then current mark of 122, we were hoping this was an easier test for him.

So it was somewhat disappointing and frustrating, to say the least, to watch Danny Cook hard at work on Fill as soon as the starters flag came down !!

Yet try as hard as he could, DC was always fighting a losing battle, as the horse was having none of it.

Some sort of credit to FTP though as he did stay on through beaten horses to finish in 4th place, which paid expenses, but Danny Cook was not a happy bunny afterwards when he told us in the unsaddling enclosure,  “he will win when he wants to win, but he was just having none of it today.”

The honorable syndicate member from Easingwold…wise old sod that he is, commented to Sues assistant Trainer (Harvey) that perhaps cheekpieces would help to focus FTP`s mind on the job.

Harvey agreed…and to substantiate the wisdom of the pair of ageing sages , Timeforms  comment on FTP`s performance was as follows ….

“turned in his best effort of the season but typically looked very hard work; chased leaders, raced indolently, outpaced thirteenth, plodded on; it’s surprising that connections have never tried him in headgear.”

It will soon be FTP`s 11th birthday, but I`m convinced our lightly raced “veteran” has still got time on his side, and if everyone is agreed, it will be very interesting to find out if the application of any headgear will have the desired effect in his next race.

Now down to a rating of 120 from 13th Dec., there has to be every chance he will be back to winning ways very soon.
