Haydock 30th December 2022
The consensus was 50 / 50 as to whether or not we should run Romeo on ground forecast to be soft with rain forecast……. the Met office got it right….we didn`t.
Our decision to run was based on advice that the ground would be wet, but should not not be a problem. A half hour downpour before Romeos race soon put paid to that theory.
Our usual spring heeled Romeo, became a leaden footed Romeo as only FOUR of the ten hurdles were jumped with any authority, the others were either ballooned, novicey, deliberate, or even kamikaze as he completely flattened the sixth, resulting in a few expletives from our jockey afterwards making his point never, ever to race Romeo again on such ground.
WE ALREADY KNEW… the evidence was already there for all to see, from a race in which he ran badly on heavy ground at Carlisle 30th October.
Good news was, he ate up and was well the following morning.
Thomas Willmott has been assured Romeo will be getting his ground from now on, making the best use of his speed and stamina in middle to long distance handicap hurdles.
