Becky the Thatcher runs Catterick Wed 29th June

Just a quick update to advise Micky has decided to run BTT at Catterick on Wed 29th June in a 1ml 5f 176 yds Class 5 hcp. This is another step up in distance for her, but our trainer is convinced she will stay the trip. Two plus factors should work to our advantage; P J McDonald is back on board for the first time this season  Quite a lot of rain has been forecast which will suit our cause well.

Becky the Thatcher......we`re getting there !

As mentioned in the previous post, our intention with Becky was to race three days earlier at Thirsk on Monday 13th June, but the meeting was abandoned after three races. So we decided to take our chance at Ripon in a better Class 4 race, with our trainer saying it would be harder to win. Undeterred however, and with expectations rising with the forecast heavy rain showers, members gathered at the course, only to find that the forecast rain did not turn up, never looked like turning up, the men in the crowd watching the England v Wales match on the big screen were all in their shirtsleeves, and the ladies…on ladies day,  resplendent in  beautiful…..some not so beautiful outfits were revelling in the dry, warmish conditions. 1m 4f in front of us then, with jockey instructions to lie 3rd / 4th then go for it on the bend into the straight. Fair play to Duran Fentiman, he carried out his instructions to the letter. Third turning into the straight, he pressed the button, but well as she responded, Becky couldn`t quite get on terms with the front two. Nevertheless only one horse got passed her..the favourite, and she finished

What a difference a shower makes

What a difference a shower makes

There I was….Becky the Thatchers race was next on the card, so it was time for me to watch her being saddled up, before entering the parade ring. Then came the  announcement that the stewards, plus a selection of trainers and jockeys were  being carted down to the bend into the straight area to deliberate over its safety after jockey Shane Grays mount in the previous race had slipped badly, giving the jockey a nasty fall. After lengthy discussions racing was abandoned, and an announcement to that effect was received by a silent crowd. Was this debacle avoidable ?    of course it was….and should have been. But I will leave it to the Racing press experts to pass comment and judgement on the events. Perhaps the finger of fate might well have  worked in our favour though, as Micky Hammond had the presence of mind ….in case the good to firm forecast ground at Thirsk prevailed, to make an entry for Becky 3 days later, on the 16th June at Ripon…which has now become a declaration, AND with the likelihood of softer ground almost certain, our chances will improve as each drop of rain falls on the Ripon course. Plus

Becky the Thatcher Ripon Thursday 2nd June `16

First of all, apologies for the delay in updating the site. My trusty computer, according to my expert technical man, suffered a major hard drive problem, and as a result many files that I hadn`t backed up went into cyber space, never to be seen again. Anyway we`re back in action, but unfortunately not to report success for our 3yo filly Becky the Thatcher. I accept its early days yet for her, but I must confess to being disappointed with her performance. No excuses were on offer to connections after the race other than our jockey, riding to instructions, commented he thought he maybe should have kicked for home earlier, instead of holding on to her until the final three furlong dash. Becky wasn`t beaten far, and she came out of the race fine, so all that can be done is to wait and see how the handicapper rated her performance, and move on to race 3 of her season. No excuses from me either. Its a case of the jury`s out… and Micky Hammond has the job of proving to us guys, what I know he sincerely believes to be true, that Becky is well capable of winning races

Becky the Thatcher stable visit

Talk about idyllic.  Lovely bright morning  sunshine,  snow topped hills all around… horses at work on the gallops, and  Joe Colliver saying ” she`s the best I`ve  ridden” As if you needed telling…. Joe was on board our filly Becky the Thatcher Joe`s a NH jockey I know, and every opinion is relative, but I`m sure he knows a decent horse when he rides one. My opinion is relative also, but its been nearly six months since I`d seen Becky, yet even to this untrained eye, the sight from which which was slightly impaired by the snowflake effect of a migraine attack, it was still clear enough for me to see how much she has grown. Back at the yard, as Joe Colliver was unsaddling her, he told me what a great feel she has started to give him, and he commented on her strong galloping action, and how much ground she covers in her stride when asked to quicken…. “I really like her” he said…..”she`ll jump a hurdle as well.” One thing at a time please Joe ! Micky was understandably more cautious, content to say “she`s a lovely horse and I`m very pleased with her” He then produced
