A trip too far for Becky

A trip too far for Becky

Haydock Saturday  23rd December 2017 It was alarm clocks set at crack o dawn for members as the off time for Beckys latest chosen race at Haydock was  11-55am…the first race on the card. We were all cautiously optimistic of another big run, but there were obvious doubts over the extra distance on such heavy ground. Both  turned out to be the determining factors in her finishing 4th, nevertheless, she ran an honest race which will help our future efforts to enable us to tick all the right boxes in order for her to win more races, which Becky is more than capable of doing. This latest was more of a tactical race with the heavy ground causing six jockeys to play a cat and mouse game, waiting for someone to make a move. The move came as the horses were about to turn into the straight, where our jockey ended up losing his place, and although Becky stayed on ok, the extra distance went against her, as did the sticky ground. Becky was fine after the race, and our good friend the handicapper has dropped  her 1lb down to 130 for that performance, so there will be plenty of

Brilliant Becky just loves hurdling

Brilliant Becky just loves hurdling

The word from Micky Hammond was he thought Becky would find it difficult to win carrying a weight of 12 st (less jockey allowance) against older, more experienced horses and on ground that was very testing. I think that was also the Bookmakers assessment of her chances as she opened at 16`s and rapidly drifted to 20`s ….25`s….28`s….and finally 33`s…. totally friendless in the market. I was also mindful of the task in front of Becky, and after relating trainers comments to my members, became progressively less confident, as, one by one, they were made aware of the perceived difficult task Becky was about to face, resulting in just my “loyalty” bet of £5 ew on her at 28-1. Others were not so lily livered, and took advantage of best odds guaranteed online, and profited nicely as a result. But what was about to unfold had nothing to do with SP`s. Finian O` Toole was given instructions to race midfield and…all being well, slowly make his move down the back straight. These instructions were carried out to perfection, and as the front horses turned for home, it was clear Becky was going as well as anything as Finn sat motionless,

ITS RAINING WINNERS As Delusion and Becky both win their latest races

ITS RAINING WINNERS As Delusion and Becky both win their latest races

Due to frustrating WiFi problems involved with the installation of a new faster speed BT hub into my office, I have been unable, until now, to communicate updates on t`internet. Both BT and Sky struggled to resolve the problem, both blaming each other, but thanks to an intervention from a 3rd party, all is now well. My wife insists the world should be told who this third party person was, the one who suggested we try the old SKY cure for everything when a problem occurs, namely switch off  power at mains for 30 seconds…switch back on and usually all`s back to normal…..as indeed it was in this case. The third party was, as I`m sure you`ve guessed ,  Mrs Longley, my beautiful, modest wife !! Back to business then, and what a week its been for members of McGoldrick Racing. It began with an excellent victory for Delusionofgrandeur at Catterick Friday 24th Nov in the Class 3 3ml 1f , Go Racing in Yorkshire Hcp Qualifier at odds of 6-4. Then yesterday Wed 29th Nov at Wetherby, in the class 4 2ml 3f + hcp hurdle, members were ecstatic as Becky the Thatcher, carrying a welter burden of 12

Becky the Thatcher news

Becky the Thatcher news

Spoke to Becky the other day, and she, like me is proper p****d off with flat racing, so we`ve agreed to concentrate on her burgeoning hurdling career. Not surprising really, as she is rated a lowly 51 on the flat and 122 over hurdles, though I can understand Micky Hammonds logic in trying for a flat win off such a lowly mark, and even now, he still has one of those 2ml 2f flat races at Pontefract in mind for her at some point in the future. But for now, I`m delighted to say we have TWO options in mind for Becky. Plan A is at Market Rasen on Thursday 23rd Nov in a Mares only 2ml 5f hcp hurdle  0 – 120 for which we`ll get in off top weight of 12 st 3lbs which may just be enough to put us off, but it isn`t the strongest looking race, so will leave to Micky to decide whether its Market Rasen or Plan B which is a 2ml 4f hcp hurdle 0 – 120 at Wetherby the week after on Wednesday 29th Nov, which again, if we get a run, Becky would be off top weight. Watch this space.

Becky the Thatcher ….Redcar Tuesday 7th Nov `17

Becky the Thatcher ....Redcar Tuesday 7th Nov `17

Apologies to my member for the late arrival of this post relating to Beckys latest run at Redcar. I suppose the most important factor was that she ran well and showed no ill effects from the soft palate operation she underwent after her last race. She will now go hurdling. As far as this latest race at Redcar though, having watched the replay numerous times, I don`t think Andrew Mullen will end up being  in line for the ride of the season award. The race was run  at a dawdle for well over a mile until it turned into a 3 furlong “sprint” in the home straight. Therefore, for a hurdling prospect like Becky, who we believe will stay 2ml 4f, why on earth did the jockey hold her up in the rear until the sprint began.      Sprinting is not her game !! She made up some ground and was not stopping at the end, and she ended up being beaten some 7/8 lengths. But surely, with the engine we know she possesses, why on earth did the jockey not to try and make more use of her by making the race a stamina test. It was a

Becky sound after Catterick worry

Becky sound after Catterick worry

Not exactly what we were expecting to see from our budding superstar Becky the Thatcher on her first day back at work at  Catterick yesterday, but after discussions with both the Course vet after his post race examination, and later my good friend James Given MRCVS (Member of the  Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) the agreed diagnosis was that Becky was suffering from a displaced palate, a condition which restricts a horses ability to breathe properly PJ McDonald told us she was going really well until they climbed the hill onto the back straight second time around when he realised something was amiss with Becky, and when she didn`t even begin to respond to his urgings, he did the right thing, and let her come home in her own time. Micky Hammonds vet also had her scoped, and it was agreed that the minor operation was needed, and should be done. A minor setback which we could have done without, but Becky will hopefully only be on the easy list for a few days before she`s on the Middleham moors again…..back on track. Richard

Becky the Thatcher ready for action again

Becky the Thatcher ready for action again

Here we go again then with our very promising hurdler Becky the Thatcher, and after a 216 day break from her last race, Becky is fit and raring to go at Catterick on Tuesday 10th October in a 1ml 7f Class 6 handicap Micky Hammond was keen to start her 2017 / 18 season with a couple of warm up races on the flat. Its 371 days since her last run on the flat, and whilst she ran some decent races, she didn`t quite get her nose in front, so she remains a maiden. However, she was a revelation when sent hurdling and achieved a rating of 122, so racing off a flat mark of 58 for this Catterick race, she is a very well handicapped maiden….thats the theory anyway. I know Becky has been working well, and Gemma, Mickys right hand “man” was telling me how pleased she is with her work. Looks like we`ll have eleven opponents, and we`ll run off top weight of 9st 10lbs, but with PJ McDonald in the saddle, confidence in success is high. Richard

Becky the Thatcher turned out for the summer

Becky the Thatcher turned out for the summer

Despite Micky Hammond being keen to find a race for Becky to win on the flat, the continuing firm / good to firm ground has scuppered the plan. Consequently Becky has been turned out for the summer….and what happens ?  thunderstorms, heavy downpours and localised flooding !!! Hey ho, but not to worry. Becky has done us proud over the last few months and I`m sure there`s better to come from her, especially over hurdles, when she returns in preparation for a winter campaign.

Entries for two of our horses

Entries for two of our horses

BECKY THE THATCHER…… Micky Hammond, despite her two wins over hurdles, is keen for Becky to lose her maiden tag on the flat. We have been waiting for suitable ground conditions, but everywhere the ground has been either firm or good to firm. However, the rain has arrived and as a consequence we have entered Becky at Carlisle on Monday 22nd May in the  2ml 1f  Class 5  51-70 h/cap off at 5.25pm. Becky has a rating of 122 over hurdles, but only 58 on the flat, so she will be nicely weighted, and should run a big race. A win would do no harm whatsoever to her CV  as a valuable brood mare.   STARBOARD WATCH After her first outing at Catterick recently which proved to be disappointing, James Given has entered Starboard Watch in a 1 mile maiden race at Nottingham on Tuesday 23rd May… the day after Beckys run at Carlisle, and all we can hope for is the longer distance and more suitable track will eke out some improvement from her. Very early days yet, however James firmly believes she has the ability to win races, so members are happy to go along with his opinion,
